Situation Report - June, 2009
GENERAL
- The permission has been
given for paddy cultivation in about an extent of 100 acres at Navalady,
Arialai east beyond railway road.
- 28 families that lived at
Maruthanarmadham railway station for a long time have been asked to leave
the place. They were not given any place for resettlement.
- It is reported that there
have been some refugees found in a sun dune near Thanushkodi.They have now
been rescued by the Indian Navy.
FOOD AND NON-FOOD ITEMS
- Wheat flour and sugar are
now abundantly supplied to the M.P.C.S in Jaffna district.
- The price of 1 kg of sugar
has been fixed to be Rs.87 for the end consumers.
HEALTH
- There is a Jaffna resident
who is being monitored to check whether he has been infected with Swine flu
virus.
- Dr.A.Ketheeswaran, the
Regional Director of Health Services Jaffna, has commented that there are
troubles in terms of lodging facilities of the doctors, although it has been
planned to appoint the required number of doctors for Jaffna district.
EDUCATION
- The government has taken
necessary steps to conduct special classes for the G.C.E Advanced level
students at Vavuniya relief villages.
- The University students at
welfare camps will be provided with economical relief.
MISSING AND ARREST
- The government has
admitted that the elderly people at interim camps are dying, but naturally.
- It is complained that
20-30 youngsters are disappearing from Vavuniya IDP camps daily. But it has
been denied by the government.
INTERNALLY DISPLACED PEOPLE
- The particulars of those
staying at welfare camps can be known through Human Rights Commission (HRC),
Jaffna.
- The official estimation by
the government says 287,598 people have displaced on May 11th
only and 262,632 people are now residing at IDP camps.
- The Australian government
is searching for 3 of its citizens among the 300,000 IDPs at Vavuniya IDP
camps.
- The welfare camp at
Vavuniya Gamini Maha vidhyalayam has been closed and 1,698 IDPs who were
staying there were shifted to Sumathipuram Welfare camps.
- The High court has ordered
the Chief Justice to consider and check the possibilities of the IDPs at
welfare camps being released from the camps.
- The International Jury’s
Association has requested that the IDPs at Vavuniya welfare camps should be
treated according to Geneva Convention.
- There has been a special
project inaugurated especially for the IDPs by Sri Lankan Human Rights
Commission.
CURFEW
- Curfew has been enforced
from 9.00 p.m to 4.00 a.m in Valigamam, Islands, Thenmaradchy and
Vadamaradchy divisions.
