Jaffna Peninsula.

Food Items:
Most Rev.Dr. Thomas Savundaranayagam, Bishop of Jaffna has in a press release stated that the people of the peninsula would be facing a food crises leading to death by starvation. The food items received by ship recently were not sufficient even for a week. At least 5000 Mt. of essential food items are required for a week’s consumption in the peninsula. Lordship has requested the government and the LTTE to arrange to send further consignment till the A-9 High way is opened. He has advised to get protection from the ICRC for the ship.
According to news reports a ship with 3,600 tons of food stuff is expected to leave Colombo harbour by 2nd September.
Fuel:
The price of petrol and diesel has been increased by Rs.7/- per litre with effect from 1st Sep’06.
Travel:
Bus service to Thenmaradchy which was suspended from 11th of August was resumed on 31st Aug’06. Though school bus service was provided, there were very lesser number of students using the service.
Aerolanka has announced that preference would be given to those passengers with return tickets obtained prior to 11th Aug’06 in their flights to commence on the 4th September.
Killings:
A youth was shot dead at about 2 p.m. on 31/08/06 near Rasapathai Junction on Irupalai, Kondavil road by unknown men.
Ponniah Saravanalingam (50) wife Thaneswary (50) and another woman Velautham Thangaratnam (52) of the educated girls scheme at Mirusuvil were shot dead by unidentified men on 31/08/06.
