Situation Report 26th June 2009
GENERAL
- The restrictions on fishing in Jaffna Peninsula have been lifted. The prices of sea food fall down.
- Essential commodities, food items, spare parts and electrical items have been brought to Jaffna by Lorries via the A9.
- Special security arrangements are in progress for the upcoming Municipal elections in Jaffna to be held on the 8th of August.
- Many roads in Jaffna that have been inaccessible for the public are now open.
- The last bus service from Jaffna bus stand will be at 7.30 p.m.
- A set of 3 local newspapers were set on fire at kannathiddy and Aanaipanthi.
FOOD AND NON-FOOD ITEMS
- Wheat flour and sugar brought to Jaffna are to be distributed to the MPCSs.
- There is still shortage for pen torch batteries in Jaffna.
EDUCATION
- Mr.Susil Premajayanthe, the minister of Education paid a visit to Jaffna schools and analyzed about the needs.
HEALTH
- There are activities carried out to prevent the proliferation of mosquito in Jaffna.
- There are more than 12,000 IDPs who have been infected with Pox disease.
MISSING AND ARREST
- 12 people including Tamils have been arrested at Wellawatte.
- 25 prisoners detained at Anuradhapura jail for the past 2 years have requested that they should be released.
- 120 Tamil prisoners who have been detained at Magazine jail have requested the President to take proper steps to release them.
- Further 17 Tamils have been arrested in Wellawatte in suspicion.
- The Police of Kodikamam hands over the corpse of a youngster with shot injuries.
INTERNALLY DISPLACED PEOPLE
- There have been 25 deaths of elderly people of families staying at Sivan Kovil elder’s home, Kovilkulam, Vavuniya during a period of 1 month.
- There are 4,000 IDPs at welfare camps suffering from eye disorders.
- 9,247 elderly IDPs have been handed over to the Social welfare ministry. The particulars of them can be known at the Jaffna office of the ministry.
- Around 4,000 IDPs have been transferred from schools to Sumathipuram transitional camp.
- The number of IDPs has increased to 285,018.
Curfew
- The curfew will be lifted
by 2 ½ hours .i.e. The curfew will be enforced from11.00 p.m to 4.00 a.m.
